A fascinating tour that traces some of the large-scale `rescue` excavations conducted in the center of modern Jaffa during the past decade. Led by Dr. Yoav Arbel from the Antiquities Authority, the tour includes Clock Square, the Flea Market, the Ottoman Gate, the Promenade, the Port, and Hatzorfim and Yehuda Hayamit Streets. The tour will highlight findings from the late Ottoman period (the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century) during which the city of Jaffa underwent significant changes.

Ottoman Saraya House and Governor`s Residence

A rare opportunity to visit this historic, Neoclassical structure which, when constructed at the end of the 19th century, was considered a pioneering endeavor that encouraged others to engage in private enterprise outside the old city walls. The building initially served as an Ottoman government complex and in 1917 was transferred to the British. In 1946 it was handed over to the Supreme Arab Committee, only to be blown up by members of the Lehi underground in January 1948. In 1997, after 50 years of neglect, the Tel-Aviv-Yafo Municipality undertook its exterior restoration and renovation. The interior renovation was carried out by the Turkish government which regained ownership of the building and intends to open a cultural center there.

An ancient stone house characteristic of Old Jaffa that grew over the years and eventually became a three-story home. Each story opens up onto a wide veranda, and above all three stories there is a roof with a sea view. The house was painstakingly renovated by the Politis family, with considerable attention paid to the building`s history and its original building materials. And when you look out through its windows, Old Jaffa is revealed in all its splendor.

A tour of the Jaffa Port with Amir Balaban (from the Jerusalem Bird Observatory). One of the most ancient ports in the Mediterranean Basin which is home to different kinds of algae as well as a large variety of animals: fish, seabirds, as well as fruit bats, insects, common swifts and barn swallows. The tour will track the numerous animals that live at the Port and uncover its singular food web, which relies on the sea rock formation that the harbor and breakwaters were built on in addition to vegetation that is intertwined with the sandstones that were used to construct the ancient port structures.

An open house in a structure built in 1892, serving as the studio of the painter Moshe Rosenthalis from 1964 until his death in 2008 and housing a permanent collection of his works. A typical Jaffa building from the Ottoman period, with arched ceilings, large spaces and decorative windows, originally built as a residence for the servants working for the Turkish governor. The view seen from the studio inspired Rosenthalis`s work and has been immortalized in many of his paintings.

A four-story house located in a 150-year-old Ottoman structure, originally designed as a grand Jaffa residence. Serge Tiroche, founder of the "Incubator for Young Israeli Artists" project, grew up in the house, which currently serves as an exhibition space for temporary displays of the Incubator`s artists, with each room highlighting a different artist against its distinct setting.

The Designer Aviv Kopler`s Loft

A unique opportunity to hear the fascinating story behind the Zahalon complex in Jaffa, including the maternity hospital built in 1933 by Dr. Fouad Ismail Dajani amidst orange groves found outside the old city walls. The villa served as his family`s private residence, and surrounding it there was an expansive garden with an avenue of towering ficus trees, marble benches and fountains – most of which are still fully intact.  The hospital also provided medical services to British officers during the Mandate Period, and its courtyard still serves as Dr. Dajani`s final resting place, who died in 1940. The tours will be led by Lior Oz, Oded Narkiss and Eitan Mann, students at Tel Aviv University`s School of Architecture, who researched the complex as part of an initiative of the School`s Preservation Studio, under the supervision of the architects Amnon Bar Or and Sergio Lerman. Each tour lasts about an hour.

The architect Yaakov Yaar, Israel Prize recipient, will lead a walking tour of the neighborhood that he planned, and for which he won the Prize in 1980. The neighborhood, whose planning sought to challenge the traditional urban tenement, was built according to a repetitive pattern of 5 tenements – each comprised of ten 4-story buildings and one tall 8-story building – which curve around and create five inner gardens. During the tour Yaar will also talk about the hierarchy created by the network of streets: a main commercial thoroughfare, a side road, local service roads, and pedestrian boulevards, between which the public buildings have been interlaced. The tour lasts about 40 minutes.

A bike tour with the architect Uriel-Natan Babchick, assistant Municipal Architect. The tour will follow the route of the city`s recently completed coastline promenade, which now extends from southern Jaffa to Tel Baruch. It will present the strategic plan that unveiled the residents` desire to link the city with the beach and create an uninterrupted promenade. It will also pass by a number of new municipal projects such as the Jaffa Slope, the Jaffa Port, the Gordon Swimming Pool, et al.

The Dan Regional Association for Environmental Infrastructures will open its doors and host six tours in the Dan Region`s backyard – namely the Hiriya Landfill – which has become an international model for how to treat different kinds of waste using cutting-edge technologies. Hiriya also serves as a model for environmental repair, rehabilitation and planning. All the tours will include a visit at the Environmental Education Center and a bus tour of different sites in the complex: the waste transfer station, the recycling industries park, and the garbage mount. The tours will be led by the Center`s key staff members who have been instrumental in its planning and management. Each tour lasts about two hours.

Architectural Preservation Planning: The architect Gil Vadia, who is entrusted with designing the Center for Environmental Education building, will talk about the project`s architectural aspects, which turned an old compost factory into a leading environmental education center. Friday, May 7th, 9:00.

From Vision to Implementation: This tour, led by Idit Alhasid who directs the Environmental Education Center, will focus on how the Center`s educational worldview was shaped and how it has been articulated in its planning, establishment and current operation, while implementing social and green principles at each and every stage. Friday, May 7th, 13:00.
  4. Hiriya – From Environmental Hazard to National Asset: The landscape architects Yael Moriah and David Sakali, together with the engineer Danny Sternberg, CEO of the Ariel Sharon Park Company Ltd., will present the landscape planning principles in place at the Ariel Sharon Park – the expansive park that currently extends across the old garbage mount. Friday, May 7th, 10:00.
  5. Recycling as a Design Concept: The artist Brigitte Cartier, who specializes in recycled materials and is responsible for the Center`s colorful and sustainable interior design, will illustrate her professional worldview and the secret charm that turns waste into furniture. Friday, May 7th, 12:00.

A tour led by Aviva Schwartz at one of the most special green oases found in the Dan District. A nature reserve comprised of green fields, citrus groves and gardens that encompass historic sites and buildings from the 19th century. The tour will pass through the palm tree avenue, the Bengalian ficus, the synagogue and the underground halls carved in the rock – testifying to Mikve Israel`s ancient winery. The tour lasts about two hours.
